This massive analysis examined 259,388 adults without coronary heart disease at baseline. The results confirmed the severe risks associated with abdominal fat accumulation.
Across normal weight and overweight categories, an elevated waist measurement correlated with severe health problems. High waist circumference or waist to hip ratio was generally associated with 15% to 50% higher risk. This risk increase applied to most of nine cardiovascular and mortality outcomes. These outcomes included stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and coronary heart disease.
The elevated risk also applied to broad cardiovascular disease and all cause mortality. People with obesity but a low waist circumference generally had risk profiles similar to normal weight people with low waists. BMI provides a decent baseline context for large populations. A highly capable body requires aerobic capacity, good mobility, fast recovery, and occupational readiness. Muscle mass acts as a biological armor against physical decline and frailty.
Strength training and adequate protein intake are especially relevant for this demographic population. Preserving muscle supports safe mobility and structural independence in later life. Dr. Wen emphasized maintaining muscle strength and performing regular aerobic activity. She recommends brisk walking, cycling, or swimming to complement routine resistance training.
The most defensible health strategy is a combined tracking dashboard. Veterans should monitor their waist trend, body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol. They must also track physical fitness, strength, sleep quality, and functional capacity. CNN recommends considering several of these health factors together rather than relying on BMI alone.
